Why Choose Natural Fiber & Organic Clothing?
We think a lot about what goes in our bodies and what we put on our skin, but what about the clothing that sits against our skin all day?
That’s one reason I created this guide. I’ve gathered natural fiber and organic clothing for babies, kids, women and men, including organic cotton, 100% cotton, linen, wool and other natural fiber options at a variety of price points.
Clothing can be made from natural fibers like cotton, linen, hemp and wool, or synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon and acrylic. There is also more to consider than just the fiber listed on the tag. Clothing can go through extensive dyeing and finishing processes and may be treated for things like stain resistance, water resistance and wrinkle resistance.
For our family, choosing natural fibers isn’t about being perfect or replacing everything we own. It’s about reducing unnecessary exposures where we can and choosing better options when we’re already buying something new.
Natural Fibers We Look For
Organic Cotton: One of my favorite options, especially for clothing worn frequently or directly against the skin. Organic cotton is grown according to organic agricultural standards that restrict many conventional synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
100% Cotton: A great natural fiber option when organic isn’t available or doesn’t fit the budget. Conventional cotton isn’t the same as organic cotton, so I recommend washing new clothing before wearing it. Washing can help remove some residues from manufacturing, handling and finishing. I also like to air or sun-dry new conventional cotton when possible.
Linen: Made from flax, linen is a breathable, durable plant fiber and a great alternative to synthetic fabrics.
Hemp: Another durable plant-based natural fiber. It’s less common in everyday clothing, but it’s another option I like when I can find it.
Wool & Merino Wool: Natural fibers that are especially useful for socks, sweaters, base layers and cold-weather clothing. Merino wool tends to be softer than traditional wool.
You’ll sometimes find a small percentage of elastane or another synthetic fiber added for stretch, especially in underwear, socks, leggings and fitted clothing. When a completely natural option isn’t practical, I look for clothing that’s still predominantly made from natural fibers.
Clothing Certifications to Know
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): One of my favorite certifications to look for. GOTS verifies organic fiber content and also includes requirements for textile processing, chemical inputs, environmental practices and social criteria.
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: Tests the finished textile and its components against limits for a large number of potentially harmful substances. It doesn’t mean the fabric is organic or even a natural fiber, but it can provide additional reassurance about the finished product. Product Class 1 has the strictest requirements and applies to products for babies and young children.
OCS (Organic Content Standard): Verifies organically grown materials and tracks them through the supply chain. It’s helpful for confirming organic content, but it doesn’t have the same textile-processing requirements as GOTS.
Fair Trade: Focuses on standards surrounding the people involved in producing the clothing, including working conditions and worker protections. Depending on the specific certification, requirements can also address wages, livelihoods and environmental practices.
Did You Know?
There is some unusual older research involving polyester and fertility. One study had 35 female dogs wear underwear made from polyester, a polyester/cotton blend, cotton or wool while researchers studied conception. Other research looked at polyester worn around the reproductive organs in male dogs, and one very small study involved 14 men wearing polyester scrotal slings.
The results were interesting enough to raise questions, but these studies do not prove that everyday polyester clothing causes infertility in humans. They’re small, older studies with significant limitations, so I wouldn’t use them to make that claim. I still think they’re an interesting reminder of how little most of us think about the materials we wear against our bodies every day.
Finding What Works for Your Family
You don’t have to replace your family’s entire wardrobe. I’ve included affordable 100% cotton clothing, organic baby and kids clothing, natural fiber clothing for women and men, and higher-end certified organic options, so you can find what works for your budget.
A simple place to start is with clothing worn closest to the body or for long periods of time, such as pajamas, underwear, baby clothes, socks and everyday basics. Then you can simply choose better materials as things need to be replaced.
