Functional Lab Testing

Your labs say normal. But you still don't feel well.

That gap has a name - and it has an explanation. Standard testing is built to rule out disease. Functional testing is built to find what comes before it.

Why standard labs miss it

Conventional reference ranges were built using large population averages - including people who are already unwell. "Normal" means you're not an outlier in a sick population. It doesn't mean you're functioning optimally. A TSH of 2.8 passes every standard screen. Functionally, it may signal early thyroid strain. The number is the same. The interpretation changes everything.

Traditional vs Functional Lab Testing

A Different Set of Questions

Functional testing doesn't ask "are you sick?" It asks why.

  • How are your hormones being metabolized and cleared through Phase I and Phase II detox pathways, not just what their levels are?

  • What toxins, mold compounds, or chemicals have accumulated in your body, and can you actually clear them given your genetics?

  • Are the nutrients circulating in your blood also reaching inside your cells, where they do their actual work?

  • What is your gut microbiome really doing, including its direct effect on estrogen recirculation, mood chemistry, and immune function?

  • Why do two people with the same labs, the same diet, and the same exposures feel completely different, and what does that tell us about you specifically?

what functional testing reveals

Functional Lab Testing

  1. Hormonal Testing

Urine + saliva. Shows not just hormone levels but how they're metabolized - including the estrogen breakdown pathways and 7-point daily cortisol rhythm that standard panels never capture. 60+ hormonal markers, endocrine disruptors, bone biomarkers, oxidative stress.

For you if: fatigue, mood swings, irregular cycles, PMS, PCOS, weight gain, hair loss, low libido, hot flashes, and perimenopause symptoms.

  1. Gut & Microbiome Testing

Stool and urine panel analyzing 300+ microorganisms that gives a comprehensive view of how your gut and gut–brain axis are working, integrating microbiome balance, pathogens, inflammation, digestion, permeability, detox metabolites, and neurotransmitter patterns.

For you if: bloating, brain fog, fatigue, anxiety, skin issues, weight gain, food sensitivities, estrogen dominance, mood instability, hormones and detox challenges.

  1. Toxins: Mold, Heavy Metals, Environmental, PFAS, Genetic Testing

This test gives you a clear view of how everyday toxic exposures and your detox pathways may be shaping your health. It measures toxic load from metals, mold toxins, chemicals, and PFAS and pairs it with detox genetics, helping you understand how these pressures influence energy, mood, inflammation, weight, and long-term resilience.

For you if: fatigue, brain fog, chemical sensitivity, mold exposure history, weight that won't respond to anything you try.

  1. Nutrient Testing

This test delivers a complete view of how your body uses essential nutrients, supporting energy, mood, resilience, and long-term vitality with precision. Measures vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and omegas at the cellular level - not just in the blood - paired with genetic variants. Answers the question your supplements can't: is your body actually using this?

For you if: supplements that don't seem to work, fatigue despite normal labs, hair loss, slow healing, mood instability, brain fog, metabolic and cardiovascular issues, and immune challenges.

  1. Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis

The same markers your doctor already ordered - thyroid, metabolic, liver, lipids, inflammatory, vitamins and minerals - reinterpreted through optimal health ranges instead of disease-detection cutoffs. Start here if you already have recent labs.

For you if: told your labs are normal, wanting a second read, or focused on catching patterns before they become diagnoses.

Who This is For

If your labs say fine but you feel anything but -

  • Fatigue that doesn't lift with rest

  • Hormone imbalances or cycle issues

  • Bloating, gut issues, or food reactions

  • Weight that won't shift

  • Poor sleep or wired-but-tired pattern

  • Hormone therapy not producing results

  • Supplements that don't seem to work

  • Brain fog or poor memory

  • Anxiety or mood instability

  • Skin problems without a clear cause

  • Hair thinning or loss

  • Chemical sensitivity or slow detox

  • History of mold or water damage exposure

  • Been dismissed by conventional care

Functional testing works alongside your existing medical care - not in place of it. If your current provider has reached the limits of what standard testing can find, this is where the deeper investigation begins.

Yelena Tselenchuk, Doctor of Holistic Health (BCDHH), Naturopath and Homeopath (BCN, BCHP), certified in functional blood chemistry analysis and advanced hormones, specializes in finding the root cause behind symptoms that have gone unexplained or unresolved. Fatigue, hormone imbalances, gut issues, unexplained weight changes, and brain fog are the most common reasons women reach out, often after years of 'normal labs' and no real answers.

If you are not sure which test is right for you, or if you are simply looking for someone who will investigate rather than manage, that is exactly the kind of work Yelena does. Her approach works alongside your existing medical care, not in place of it.
